“The things we love tell us what we are.” - Thomas Aquinas

Love reveals us.

Where we spend our time reveals what we value.

Where we spend our money reveals what we desire.

In every pursuit, the desire to be loved.

For the follower of Jesus, we know that love comes not from striving, but by seeing “…what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are…” 1 John 3:1

If every pursuit reveals a desire to be loved, then resting in the lavished love of God reveals our true identity: children of God; and so we are.

Father, may Your love reveal us. May we love You more than life itself. Amen.

Loved,

  • HOUSE OF THE LORD

There can be joy in the house of the Lord because Christ has died, Christ is risen, and Christ will come again. Let’s hear God call us to worship through His Word:

    Call to Worship: Psalm 138:1-6

We respond to the One who is high, yet regards the lowly, we respond to the one who is full of steadfast love and mercy. Let’s sing of His attributes:

  • JESUS!

  • JESUS PAID IT ALL

    Sermon: Luke 1:26-38

If you are here this morning as a follower of Jesus, I hope that the life of Christ fuels your joy, and your worship. Historically, the Apostles’ Creed has been used as a baptismal confession. It put language to the public profession of faith of the individual being baptized. But if you are here this morning as a follower of Jesus, these are word not just for the individual being baptized, this is family language, this is the language of the people of God. Would you stand if you’re able, and let’s confess what we believe about our faith through the words of the Apostles’ Creed:

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth;

and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church, the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Baptism Affirmations

Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God sent to redeem the world, do you love and trust Him as the One who saves you from your sin, and do you with repentance and joy embrace Him as the Lord of your life? I do.

Do you believe that the Bible is the Word of God, revealing Christ and His redemption? I do.

Do you promise to do all you can, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to strengthen your love and commitment to Christ by sharing faithfully in the life of the church, honoring and submitting to its authority; and do you join with the people of God in doing the work of the Lord everywhere? I do.

Do you welcome them in love, and do you promise to pray for, encourage, and help them in the faith? We do.

The Messy Work of Leading Worship

Ministry of any kind is a front-row seat to some of the most beautiful and painful moments of people’s lives. As a worship leader, I have often stood at the front of a church as a bride meets her groom at the altar - this is a beautiful moment. And I have sung while friends buried children - this is a painful moment.

In the Old Testament, the priests would slaughter the animals, burn the sacrifice, splash the blood, and throw the incense. This was hard physical work. This is holy work. This was work that required time, cleansing, and intentionality. This was the work that was required for a sinful people to not be consumed before a holy God. This was messy work.

But thanks be to God because of Christ Jesus…

“…holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted about the heavens. He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself.” Hebrews 7:24-27

The messy work of sacrifice has been accomplished once and all for Christ. But God has made us a kingdom of priests - those who intercede on behalf of another. Those who bear the burdens of one another before God. To point people to their Great High Priest:

“…To him who loves us and has freed us from our sings by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.” Revelation 1:6

“As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 2:4-5

Followers of Jesus are called into the messy work of laboring for and on behalf of our brothers and sisters. We must know the people we lead, so that as we stand on a platform we are singing over them, to them, and on their behalf as we look to the One who daily bears us all up.

September 6: Tuesday Refocus

“Love, proceeding from faith, gradually changes the soul, into the likeness of God; and the more it is in exercise the more is that change effected.” - John Owen

Those who know how deeply, how completely, how honestly they have been loved, love in response.

“Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven - for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little loves little.” And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” Then those who were at the table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?” And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” Luke 7:47-50

Lord, may we be aware of Your great love for us in the deepest places of our souls. May it change us over and over into the likeness of Yourself. Amen.

Loved,

  • JESUS!

    Call to Worship: Psalm 93

The good news for you and me this morning is that Jesus is alive, and He rules and reigns. There is nothing outside of His care, let’s sing in response to our God who rules and reigns:

  • I STAND AMAZED (HOW MARVELOUS)

Let’s confess what we believe about our faith through the words of the Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

  • SON OF SUFFERING

Sermon: Colossians 1:17-23

There is no square inch of all creation over which Christ does not say ‘mine.’ And that is including you and me. So let’s use these next songs to put language around the joyful surrender of our lives to the One who is preeminent in all things. Would you stand if you’re able, let’s sing…

  • IS HE WORTHY?

  • CHRIST BE MAGNIFIED

Is Leading Worship A Spiritual Gift?

I have been asked before if I believe that leading worship is a spiritual gift. The ability to play music is certainly a God-given gift that requires cultivation like any other talent or ability. And for the person who is indwelt by the Holy Spirit, truly everything we do is spiritual - but is leading worship a Spiritual gift? Does the Holy Spirit impart the ability to lead sung corporate worship, at the moment of my conversion?

Scripture does not provide one single, complete list of all the available Spiritual gifts. We see gifts listed throughout various passages like Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12-14, Ephesians 4, and 1 Peter 4. But nowhere in these passages do we see ‘worship leader,’ listed as a spiritual gift. We know that spiritual gifts are given by the Holy Spirit, all are necessary, and they are given for the building up of the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:11, 14, Ephesians 4:12).

Is leading worship spiritual, yes.

Is leading worship a gift, absolutely.

Is leading worship a spiritual gift? Probably not. But we can employ our spiritual gifts in the service of God’s people, to God’s glory, as we lead worship spiritually.

“Christian spiritual practices are simply conscious ways of interacting with Christ.” - Trevor Hudson

Followers of Jesus are called to abide in Christ because we know that apart from Christ we can do nothing (John 15:4-5). Yet, we can be guilty of seeing spiritual practices as an attempt to possess, achieve, earn or receive something from God. Spiritual maturity? A blessed life? For God to do our bidding?

Christian spiritual practices are for communing with Christ. Abiding in action. May our practices shape us for the life to come: “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.” 1 Corinthians 13:12

Let it be so, Lord. Amen.

Amen,

  • BEFORE THE THRONE

    Call to Worship: Psalm 24:1-6

When we praise and worship God,we don’t tell God something about himself that he does not already know. We don’t add to his worth or value, he is eternally unchanging.

We don’t praise Him to fill up some empty space in God - he has no need.

We don’t praise God to get something from God. No, We praise and worship God because he is the only one worthy of our worship. He commands our worship. He delights in our worship.

So we join in the ancient praise of all God’s people this morning in giving back to God what belongs to God alone.

  • ALL CREATURES OF OUR GOD AND KING

  • HYMN OF HEAVEN

    Sermon: Genesis 1:1. Acts 17:24-25

Worship is the right response of our whole lives to God’s revelation of Himself. Worship begins with God. And God created us not just to worship but created us worshiping - when we are not worshiping God it is not that our worship ends, but that we worship anything and everything other than God. Right worship is only possible as the Spirit of God opens our eyes to behold the beauty of our Creator and Savior. So as we continue in sung worship, would you pray that God would give you eyes to see Him as the only One worthy of your worship? Let’s stand and sing…

  • YET NOT I BUT THROUGH CHRIST IN ME

  • PROMISES

    Benediction: Romans 11:33-36

Uncomfortable For The Right Reasons

For some, the life of the believer is a fragrance from life to life, and for others, it is the fragrance from death to death (2 Corinthians 2:16). The Gospel can be a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense (1 Peter 2:8). How do we reconcile this reality as we think about our corporate gatherings? Danny Franks says, “The Gospel is offensive. Nothing else should be.”

When I plan the liturgies I lead, I want people to be uncomfortable for the right reasons. I desire for the Holy Spirit to expose and confront our sin, lead us to Christ, and comfort us in our affliction. I pray that we continually die to ourselves, pick up the cross, and follow the One in whose image we are being conformed. Life in Christ is death to self, and this is uncomfortable. This is what it looks like to be uncomfortable for the right reasons. But too often in our churches, we make people uncomfortable for the wrong reasons…

Transitions. We are sloppy with our transitions, late lyric changes, and technology not being ready to go. Turning a chord chart page, changing a CAPO, being uncertain about what element in the gathering comes next.

Language. Using insider language like Christianese, or language that is only familiar to regular attenders. We need to be wise not just with the words we use, but the way we communicate.

Communication. We don’t help people know what to do, and when. We don’t spend enough time teaching, shepherding, and guiding people through the service. We have not learned the essential nature of rubrics.

Context. Do we know the people, their stories, and the history of where we are leading?

Community. There is a cognitive dissonance when our communities (both local and global) are in crisis and we ignore that reality in our corporate gatherings. We must speak with wisdom, discernment, and clarity that points people to the hope of the Gospel even in the midst of current events.

Let people be uncomfortable in the gathering, but only for the right reasons.

“Sanctify yourself and you will sanctify society.” - Francis of Assisi

It is always easier to see the spec in the eye of another than the plank in our own (Matt 7:3). We can mourn the sin in the world without recognizing that our own sin leads us to death (Romans 6:23). We can wring our hands over gun violence, mass shootings, and homicides while ignoring the reality that to look at someone with hate in your heart is to murder them (1 John 3:15). “Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself,” said Leo Tolstoy.

Those who allow the spotlight of God’s holiness to illuminate, expose, and burn away the darkness, will be the light of the world (Matthew 5:14).

Sanctify us in truth, because Your word is truth. Spirit, be about your work in our world and in our lives. Amen.

Let it be,

  • GOD SO LOVED

    Call to Worship: Psalm 113

The One who sits enthroned ruling and reigning is the One who is acquainted with all our ways and knows us truly, deeply, and intimately. That should both comfort us and confront us. Let’s sing and celebrate the One who gives more grace, and gives of Himself:

  • GRACE ALONE

  • A THOUSAND HALLEJUAHS

    Sermon: Matthew 6:9-13

Pastor and author Ray Ortlund said, ‘God is not too great to notice you, God is too great to overlook you.’ He is imminent and infinite, He has Father and the Almighty. Would you stand, and let’s sing to our God our Father:

  • HOW DEEP THE FATHER’S LOVE FOR US

Let’s sing to God the Almighty:

  • HOW GREAT THOU ART

    Benediction: Romans 11:33-36

Identifying Seasons

Transitions are difficult even when they are positive.

The familiarity of our lives and the world shifted two and a half years ago, and many of us are still struggling to find a new ‘normal’ rhythm to life and ministry.

We may not be able to change the season, but we can identify the season and begin to see how it may be changing us.

Theologian, Walter Brueggemann, speaks about how the Psalms are in three categories, Psalms or orientation, disorientation, and new orientation.

The full scope of the human experience is represented in the Psalms, so is it no surprise that our lives move in similar seasons of orientation, disorientation, and new orientation. Here is how Brueggemann describes these seasons:

Orientation is the establishment of structure and order.

Disorientation is a place of imbalance and nonsense even potentially unjust.

New orientation is moving forward away from what was and toward new possibilities.

As I consider these seasons, I remind myself - It won’t always be this way… but it might. This may be a season, or it may be the story God is telling with the entirety of your life. I have found that the more aware I am of the season I am in, the less I try to buck against what is and cling to what has been.

“The secret is Christ in me, not me in a different set of circumstances.” - Elisabeth Elliot

What season are you in?
